The rise of human-made, “anti-AI craft” visual design

As AI-made visuals become easier to produce, visible craft becomes a stronger signal of trust, care and brand distinctiveness.

As AI-generated visuals become more common, the things that signal human effort are becoming more valuable. Tactile textures, imperfect shapes, distinctive illustration, bold typography, a visible sense of craft: these are starting to function as differentiators rather than stylistic choices.

Jordan Turner’s article “Design in the Age of AI” builds on this well. The argument isn’t about nostalgia. It’s about trust and memorability. When everything begins to look like it came from the same template, uniqueness becomes a genuine competitive advantage.

For brand and interface design, this matters beyond aesthetics. Brand perception now shapes whether users trust AI-enabled experiences. People are more willing to delegate to systems that feel credible, considered and consistent. A product that looks carefully made signals that it was carefully made.
