Stop measuring traffic. Start measuring intent

Where They Meet: A thought for everyone

The useful question is no longer how many people arrived. It is what they tried to do, where confidence broke and which signals helped the business act.

Web analytics used to answer simple questions: how many people visited, where did they come from, which pages did they view, and where did they drop off?

These numbers are still important, but they are no longer enough. Search is changing. Consent is changing. Journeys are fragmented across devices, channels, platforms and AI surfaces, so a session can look shorter or less valuable than it really is, when in fact the user simply arrived with more context.

The more useful question is “what was the user trying to do, and what stopped them?” rather than “did traffic go up?”

This is where analytics is getting interesting. Contentsquare now treats frustration as a measurable business issue. Microsoft Clarity has added AI summaries and AI visibility alongside its heatmaps and recordings. Google Analytics is adding features to help teams spot behavioural shifts faster.
The results are already showing. Allianz Specialty used behavioural analytics to find where users were dropping out of its quote-and-buy journey, then fixed those points, lifting conversion by seven percentage points. NBC used product intelligence to improve Day 7 retention and viewership, simply by putting insights in front of more teams, not just data specialists.

Business leaders need analytics that do more than describe the past. Measuring intent means looking beyond page visits and session length, towards task completion, retention and whether changes actually reduce friction.
